The New York Times recently published an article, "In Tough Times, the Humanities Must Justify Their Worth." The division between science and the humanities is a recent contrivance, and its maintenance has no good historical precedent. The humanist training, the whetting of mental faculties that not only separate us from the animals but allow us to weigh and manage the fruit and potential fruit of our technical wizardry, is as essential to a growing society as the freedom that makes it possible. Continue reading →

Richard Stallman was in Vancouver two weeks ago. He performed, if I may describe his lectures like that, three times; I caught the first. I asked Stallman a question after it was over, and thoroughly annoyed him. I know that I annoyed him because he grew flustered, stamped his feet, turned away from me to the rest of the crowd and yelled at me. Continue reading →

Michael has a physical disability and has run into an issue with the Quebec government witholding further adaptive assistance, even though the current problem is likely due to a restriction they themselves have imposed. Michael is asking for support with a petition, and I've given him some well-deserved soapbox space here. Continue reading →

The Save-On Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria wants to take B.C.'s anti-smoking legislation a bit further. Not only will they enforce the existing No Smoking laws, they will also prohibit the innocuous carrying of cigarettes by patrons on the premises.
Possession of cigarettes is neither illegal nor dangerous per se. Searching explicitly for cigarettes, without the pretence (which I assume will be assumed) of searching for illegal or dangerous goods, is trespass to the person, bordering on the tort of assault. Confiscating those cigarettes is conversion; the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre is counting on your complacency and acquiescence as it invades your space and takes what it rightfully yours. Are they going to compensate you for the cigarettes? Return them at your whim? I doubt it. This erosion of civil liberties has gone on long enough. Continue reading →

Could the momentum of enshrining the police vs. citizens paradigm lead to the political annihilation of servamus? In other words, could the potential transformative effects on society of engendering a public fear of police be out of proportion with traffic safety objectives? Continue reading →
