According to Prof. Larry Lessig, Nine Inch Nails’ latest album has been released under Creative Commons. Kudos to Trent Reznor!

I tried to comment but Prof. Lessig’s blog is giving me some sort of SQL error. Here is my comment to the best of my ability to remember it:
In the wake of my earlier post (Geist lauds CRIA; jeers RIAA…), as well as such moves by NIN, Radiohead, Terry McBride of Nettwerk, the Canadian Music Creators Coalition led by Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page, etc., we are seeing that the RIAA and its sponsoring members are obsolete.
New technology, as in the past, may lead to tectonic shifts in the industry, but not its death. CRIA has decided to go after those who actually commercially pirate music – a crime that because of its scale has an effect on the industry. CRIA, if it continues this discriminating path, will make itself relevant. RIAA is making itself obsolete, artificially preserving its fearsome appearance through formaldehyde and resin, the petrified skull of an extinct beast, made relevant only through its litigiousness.
The pioneers of popular music are still creating content, but they will do it differently. Instead of fighting new technology, Trent Reznor and others are using it to forge ahead, through the Creative Commons, through collaborative content creation, through diversified distribution channels, etc. The RIAA roars its canned roar once in a while instead of actually trying to contribute something new, something artistic, something positive, dare I say something its consumers might actually want.
